Apr 9 We're engaged!
Well it’s official, me and Josie are no longer just boyfriend and girlfriend, but fiances now. We’re very excited. The date is set for September 9, this year, and we’ve already found a very nice little chapel right outside Austin.
Suffice it to say, this will take up some more of our time, so if you’d like to help us out send in your interesting links, original articles/blogs, and participate in the forums. I’m sure we’ll have our hands full for some time.
On a more related note, we are both dreading seeing our family and having to dodge the inevitable barrage of after-marriage questions about having a child (eek!). Hopefully we can glean a bit more insight into how others feel in this situation, and maybe we’ll come up with a nice little article on how to handle the after marriage.
Apr 7 New spam filter for the forums
So, like Josie said it’s been quite hectic around here lately, I really apologize for the lack of updates/participation on the forums. I did install a plug-in on the forums though, that hopefully will help with all the spam on the off-topic forum.
We’ve actually been quite lucky, as almost all of the spam somehow finds its way to that forum, and not the others. Hopefully now, there will be almost none (we can never be too sure though).
One minor consequence though, is that there is a possibility (albiet small) that your post might get flagged as spam. If that happens, just shoot us an email, and we’ll take care of it. If it does happen to anyone, afterwards I can mark your username as “trusted” and it shouldn’t happen again (fingers crossed).
All in all it should be a big help though, as we have a hard time filtering a number of usernames and posts on a daily basis.
Mar 11 Two Entertaining Childfree Articles
First I would like to apologize for the lack of new material here lately. It’s not that there are not news items and plenty of things to talk about, it’s just that I have started a new job and will be working about 60 hours per week. Chris also has been busy recently with the army on top of his job and freelance web designing. So please bear with us, we have not forgotten about childfreechoice we are just constantly in motion. Thank you for you patience.
Now here are two links to a couple of amusing little articles I saw this morning.
Thanks for visiting!
Feb 16 Chinese resort to 'tech-tactics' to avoid nagging questions
The gaming/tech site Playfuls.com posted an article today on ‘tech-tactics’ for happily childfree couples to use during the Chinese New Year.
Some of the highlights:
For the couple with no offspring and have repeatedly explained at past reunion dinners the expenses involved and their desire to enjoy an affluent lifestyles together, “simply stick a Bluetooth headset” in one your ears, recommended Alfred Siew.
Have family gatherings via video conference, she said. “For questions that don’t deserve an answer, ignore them by pretending you are suffering from lag in your connection.”
The original article goes on to explain the declining birth rate in China, and the amount of newborns needed in this new year.
Feb 15 Welcome to the 'Womb Wars'
Nicki Defago, author of Childfree and Loving It writes a very interesting article on the growing rift between parents and the childfree in the workforce.
Welcome to the ugly front line of what is being dubbed the ‘Womb Wars’...What I discovered was a minefield of resentment, a growing backlash against a government obsessed with pushing family-friendly policies to the top of the political agenda. Politicians need to capture parental votes, but in practice these policies affect us all, regardless of whether we have children or not.
The original article was posted on the DailyMail Online, a british paper, and it’s well worth a read. She does on to talk about being childfree in the workplace, and the resentment among the childfree that they were being ignored for not having children. There were at least 60 comments that replied to the articlem the last time I checked, and some of them were far more passionite than others (albiet a little less logical):
D.S. from Northern Ireland-Oh come on! We are talking about human lives here, you cannot compare a child to a dog! If you feel dumped on for taking up the slack left in the wake of a colleague with children, then you are just a weak person…Grow up.
Alison, form London-What total nonsense! Why shouldn’t society and the work place be able accommodate the needs of parents and children? As the UNICEF report shows, the UK has a terrible attitude towards children. If the writer has chosen not to have children, fine, but as a result she hasn’t a clue what she’s talking about.
For the most part though, the comment-discussion was decent, and had some good thoughts on the nature of working, and the childfree attitudes society sometimes ignores.
Any thoughts?
