A new acronym for the childfree movement…GINK!

I came across an exciting article on Grist.org today entitled Say it loud: I’m childfree and I’m proud. The article covers many of the standard reasons the childfree have chosen to remain that way but with more of a focus on the ecological benefits. GINK as defined by author Lisa Hymas stands for green inclinations, no kids. With the renewed focus in the last few years on the environment and ‘green’ living this may work as a more effective explanation for the nagging questions we all get about why on earth we don’t want children of our own. Any movement on that front is greatly appreciated, if being a GINK is more acceptable than being a DINK or a SINK count me in!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done any work on the site here and am feeling a bit guilty! Honestly I’m a “fits and starts” type of person, when I get going I don’t stop and then once I fall out of the rhythm it’s hard to get back into it.

In the last few weeks my husband has switched jobs, we adopted a young puppy, and spring has sprung! We say that we long for a routine, some normalcy in our lives and yet every time things settle down we stir things up again. Perhaps that’s our strongest trait as a couple, our refusal to stagnate, either way it makes it difficult to log on and keep up with the site. I am working on being better at this but it’s not easy for me. I think what I’m trying to provide is important though so it’s worth the effort!

Now that the hubby has started his job and the puppy is getting a little older and more manageable (Though only slightly!) I am hoping to finish the revamp and officially relaunch soon. That said it may take longer than I had hoped but eventually will still be a valuable resource and support system for the childfree community!

Author Ellen Walker has published the book “I Don’t Have Kids! The Guide to Great Childfree Living.” Michelle Nolan has profiled the book and author in her article, “Bellingham psychologist’s advice book reflects her child-free life.” It’s nice to hear about another resource to help people understand the reasons people are childfree.

No, you haven’t been abandoned again! I’m still working on the site. Things are a little crazy here in the real world lately. I live in Philadelphia and it’s been quite a winter this year! Things are going well though, still have to get more content up and work on the design a bit more and we’ll be ready to officially relaunch.

Erica Noonan is the mother of two young children and wrote “Will the real child-free movement please stand up?” in which she addresses something that happened on her discussion board pertaining to the “Bratfree” chat board community. The point is not what happened but what she said in response. I definitely think it’s worth a read because she makes some excellent points about some people in the childfree community.

I understand that some people really do hate children and they have a right to their personal preferences but this is not the entire childfree community. I think the childfree community gets such a bad reception particularly because of this type of anger. This is a big part of why I started this site, to explain that people who have made the choice to be childfree are not all hateful angry people. We don’t cheer when children are harmed or killed or hate parents. I have a great deal of respect for good parents. As long as parents respect my choice to not have children I will respect their choice to reproduce. That being said there’s nothing wrong with having a place to vent the frustrations we have with screaming children, pressures to reproduce and the like either.

Recently I came across an article about the childfree couples who have made the choice to also have a single income, or only one working spouse. The article is interesting and the comments provide an interesing perspective from how “normal” people view the unusual arrangement.

No kids, no jobs for growing number of wives.

Third Try’s A Charm?

Ok here we go again with a relaunch of childfreechoice.org. First we were childfreechoice.com then we became childfreechoice.org but with the same site and goals. This time we’re starting from scratch. We’re going to try something different and hopefully, this time, actually be a good little webmaster and keep it updated and all that jazz. What we hope to be is a resource for the childfree community and a launching point to get like-minded individuals connected. Being a childfree person in a world of breeders can feel pretty lonely and maybe, hopefully, this site will provide a little corner of the world where we can come together and discuss the things that matter to us.
